A Compendium Of Sentencing Research
To help commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Pennsylvania Commission on Sentencing, the Commission has published a report entitled "A Compendium of Sentencing Research." In 1978, the Legislature passed Act 215 to establish the Sentencing Commission as an agency charged with the responsibility of developing sentencing guidelines to be considered by judges across the Commonwealth to help promote fairer and more uniform sentencing practices. The Commission was also empowered to collect, publish and disseminate information relating to Commonwealth sentencing practices; to research and assess the effectiveness of the sentencing guidelines and practices; and to make recommendations to the General Assembly that the Commission finds to be necessary and advisable to carry out an effective, humane and rational sentencing policy. Since the Commission's inception, much has been written about the Commission, and a great deal of research has been conducted with the sentencing data that has been collected by the Commission. A Compendium of Sentencing Research contains abstracts from articles that have been previously published in academic journals, along with summaries of major reports that were submitted to the Department of Justice. In accordance with the copyright laws, the Commission cannot post this publication on our website. However, if you would like to order a copy of this publication, please click here.
