Introduction to Sentencing in Pennsylvania

Course Description

This seminar will cover basic terminology used in the field and provide an overview of statutes and policies related to sentencing (sentencing alternatives, mandatory minimums, county vs. state sentences, aggregation, merger, etc.).

 

Target Audience

This seminar is targeted for attorneys, probation officers, law clerks, support staff, and other court related staff who are new to the criminal justice system and have little or no experience with criminal justice concepts, terminology, and sentencing practices. 

Please note:  New probation/parole officers who already attended the PBPP-Basic Training Academy, should not attend this course unless a review is needed.

Course Description

This seminar will provide a comprehensive explanation of Offense Gravity Score, Prior Record Score, and sentencing recommendations specific to the 6th Edition Sentencing Guidelines.  There will be a review of statutes and policies related to sentencing (mandatory minimums, county vs. state sentences, aggregation, merger, etc.).  It will also include an overview of State Intermediate Punishment in addition to SGS Web.   

6th Edition guidelines apply to offenses committed on or after June 3, 2005.

 

Target Audience

This seminar is targeted for those individuals who will be required to calculate the 6th Edition Sentencing Guidelines as part of their job or those individuals who need to become more familiar with and have an understanding of general sentencing policies and the guidelines.  This session could be used as a review for someone who has not taken a sentencing training session recently.

 

Pre-Registration is Required

The training seminars are free-of-charge to anyone involved in Pennsylvania’s criminal justice system.

 

To register, please complete the registration form and mail or fax to the PA Commission on Sentencing.  Once registered, you will be sent a confirmation approximately one week prior to the training date.    Anyone requiring special arrangements or assistance please inform the PA Commission on Sentencing prior to the training session.

Please complete a separate form for each registrant.  Forms may be photocopied as needed.

Please note that the Commission reserves the right to cancel any training seminar due to lack of registered participants.  All training seminars require a minimum of 20 participants.

Training Site Information

Parking:   Most Penn State campuses provide free parking to visitors.  Parking information will be included with your confirmation after you have registered for a particular seminar.

Food and Beverages:  For the all day seminars there will be a lunch break.  However, lunch is on your own.  There will also be several short breaks throughout the day.  Food and beverages will not be provided.  Please plan accordingly.

6th Edition Sentencing Guidelines Implementation Manual 

6th Edition Sentencing Guideline Manuals will not be distributed at any of the training sessions.  

The 6th Edition Sentencing Guidelines (text, analysis, case law, charts, etc.) can be found on the commission’s website at http://pcs.la.psu.edu.

If you do not have internet access and would like to order a 6th Edition manual prior to a training date, please contact the PA Commission on Sentencing at (814)863-2797 x 1.  Please note there may be a fee associated with ordering a manual. 

Continuing Legal Education (CLE)   Credits Available

The seminars are pending approval for CLE credits; if approved, certificates of training and CLE forms will be given out at the completion of the training sessions.  Attorneys return the CLE Request Form directly to the Pennsylvania CLE Board along with their payment.

Special Requests for Training

You may request that any of our seminars be provided on-site at your location.  

Counties may also request training on a particular topic that can be tailored to fit a particular time frame. 

Groups who are interested in on-site training are required to have a minimum of 20 participants.  Please contact Field Services staff at (814)863-5204 for details and arrangements.

If CLE accreditation is requested for an on-site training, there is a $25 application fee required prior to the seminar date.  Attorneys will be provided a CLE Request Form indicating the fee scale payable to the Pennsylvania CLE Board.
