Communicating the Work of a Legislative Service Agency
As a legislative service agency, the Commission on Sentencing works to promote initiatives of the General Assembly and policies impacting sentencing, resentencing, parole and recommitment, as well as evidence-based practices, such as the use of risk-needs-responsivity assessments to inform decisions within the criminal justice system. The Commission engages with a wide range of policymakers and practitioners to communicate the enactment of new laws and modifications to existing statutes, and the development of policies that effect decisions of courts and paroling authorities across Pennsylvania.
During this seminar, staff will discuss the ways in which the work of the Commission, and actions by the General Assembly, are communicated to practitioners and to the public. Through targeted education and outreach efforts at county and state levels, and through the publication of reports and release of data, the Commission serves as a clearinghouse of criminal justice information. And through the many partnerships established over the years, the Commission works to obtain complete and accurate data that is used to inform the development and evaluation of criminal justice policies.
